Chase Isaiah Monson, 24, of Detroit Lakes, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for a felony fourth-degree assault charge after spitting on a police officer and a misdemeanor for property damage.
The charges stem from an incident on the evening of February 17, 2024, when police were called to a Detroit Lakes residence after reports of a man attempting to kick in the front door. According to court records, two men inside the home heard loud banging and saw a man, later identified as Monson, trying to force his way inside. After they threatened to call the police, Monson left the scene, but not before causing an estimated $400 in damage to the door.
Police located Monson nearby, matching the description of the suspect. Upon arrest, officers noted he appeared highly intoxicated, and a breath test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .29%. While in custody, Monson grew agitated, kicking the inside of the squad car, and later spat in an officer’s face, leading to the assault charge.
On June 12, District Judge Gretchen Thilmony sentenced Monson to 15 days in jail for the felony assault charge, with credit for three days served. If Monson successfully completes probation, the felony will be reduced to a misdemeanor. He was also sentenced to 90 days for the property damage, with 75 days stayed for one year and credit for three days served.
Monson must adhere to strict probation conditions, including no alcohol or drug use, completion of a comprehensive assessment, and following all recommendations from a mental health evaluation. He will be on supervised probation for five years and must pay $700 in fines, plus $160 in court fees.
