Detroit Lakes, MN (trfnews.i234.me)—28-year-old Nicholas Gordon Scheiben has been sentenced in Becker County District Court after pleading guilty to gross misdemeanor second-degree DWI and carrying a pistol while under the influence of alcohol.
Incident Details:
On August 2, 2024, a Becker County deputy observed Scheiben’s vehicle stopped on County Highway 26. As the deputy approached, Scheiben drove off erratically, crossing into the opposite lane and nearly going into a ditch.
When officers attempted a traffic stop, Scheiben fled at 75 mph before finally pulling over near Bruce Boulevard.
During the arrest, authorities discovered a loaded handgun in his vehicle, which Scheiben identified as his “conceal and carry” weapon. A breath test at the jail revealed a .16 BAC, twice the legal limit.
Charges & Sentencing:
- Plea agreement dropped a felony fleeing charge and a second DWI count.
- DWI sentence: 364 days in jail, with 274 days stayed for four years. Scheiben must serve 90 days, with 45 eligible for electronic monitoring.
- Fines & fees: $750 fine plus $615 court fees.
- Firearm charge: A stay of adjudication, meaning successful probation will result in dismissal. He was fined $200.
Scheiben has prior DWI convictions from 2022 (Minnesota test refusal) and 2015 (North Dakota DWI).
