Detroit Lakes (trfnews.i234.me) – A Detroit Lakes man is facing felony charges in a case prosecutors are calling highly unusual.

Court records show Dominic R. Zaccardi has been charged with felony theft, with intent to restore stolen property only for reward or other compensation.

The charge stems from an incident in May 2025. According to the criminal complaint, Zaccardi allegedly stole several items from a male victim. The stolen property reportedly included two chainsaws, a car trailer, power tools, an air compressor, a mower, and a mountain bike.

The victim later confronted Zaccardi about the missing property. At that point, Zaccardi allegedly told the victim he would return the stolen goods — but only if the victim gave him some of his puppies.

Investigators say the demand for puppies as payment was part of Zaccardi’s attempt to receive compensation in exchange for property he had no legal right to keep.

Under Minnesota law, theft with intent to restore property only for a reward is a felony offense. Conviction could carry significant prison time and fines.

The case is now moving forward in Becker County District Court.
