Ex-Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell Begins Jail Sentence
RAMSEY COUNTY (trfnews.i234.me) — Former Democratic Minnesota senator Nicole Mitchell has begun serving her six-month sentence at the Ramsey County Correctional Facility in St. Paul.
Mitchell, 50, was sentenced on September 23 to 180 days in jail along with five years of supervised probation. She was allowed to serve her time closer to home. According to Ramsey County jail records, Mitchell reported to the facility at 11:31 a.m. on September 30.
Her sentence stems from an April 2024 burglary case. In July, a Becker County jury convicted Mitchell of felony first-degree burglary and possession of burglary or theft tools. Prosecutors said Mitchell broke into her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes residence, leading to her arrest and charges.
Mitchell’s attorneys expect her to serve about two-thirds of her sentence before being released on parole. If that occurs, her projected release date is January 25, 2026, according to the Ramsey County Correctional Facility.
The former senator’s conviction marked a dramatic fall for the onetime lawmaker. She represented Minnesota Senate District 47 until her removal from office following the charges. State officials noted that felony convictions make individuals ineligible to hold public office in Minnesota.
