Beltrami County (trfnews.i234.me) – Shocking details have emerged from a deadly stabbing Sunday night north of Cass Lake, where 34-year-old Avery Owen Cadwell of Cass Lake has now been charged with second-degree murder with intent (not premeditated).
At 9:29 p.m. on June 15, deputies responded to 1161 Porcupine Road SE where an adult male stabbing victim was found unresponsive and not breathing. Despite EMS efforts, the man was later pronounced dead. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death was a 5 cm deep stab wound to the heart, ruling it a homicide.
The investigation revealed that Cadwell believed the victim owed him $100, leading to a fatal confrontation after seeing the victim pass on an ATV. Cadwell was overheard stating he was going to “get the victim” before stabbing him in the chest.
Cadwell fled into the woods, but law enforcement tracked him with a drone and a K9 unit. He later returned home to “say goodbye to his children” and was arrested. He admitted to the stabbing and said it was not in self-defense.
Cadwell now faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
