FARGO, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) — Scott Adelman, a 52-year-old resident of Horace, North Dakota, has been charged with felony theft and fleeing after leading police on a high-speed chase through rural Cass County.

According to court documents, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office was called to Oxbow on October 7 to investigate the theft of a mini-excavator and dump trailer. An employee from the company that owns the equipment followed the driver into Richland County, where they continued to follow the stolen vehicle to Adelman’s home in Davenport.

Deputies arrived around 1 p.m. and found the trailer and excavator behind a shed at Adelman’s residence. However, when they exited their vehicles, the suspect pickup truck quickly drove away, leading one of the deputies on a chase through rural Cass County on gravel roads, reaching speeds near 85 mph.

Due to excessive dust from the gravel road, the deputy had to slow down and eventually lost sight of the pickup truck. Around 4 p.m., a person called dispatch to report an abandoned and damaged pickup in a field, which matched the description of Adelman’s vehicle that had fled earlier.

While deputies responded to the scene, they received another call from the same individual stating that a man had left in the pickup truck. Despite efforts to locate the vehicle, it was not found until later that evening when neighbors provided security camera footage showing the suspect’s truck with the stolen equipment pulling out of Adelman’s driveway.

The next day, officers spotted Adelman driving his father’s car in Horace and subsequently arrested him after finding cocaine on his person. He is currently being held at the Cass County Jail awaiting trial for felony theft, fleeing, and possession of cocaine. The investigation into this daring heist continues to unfold.
