Daniel Arthur Wallace, 76, of Euclid, MN passed away early Saturday morning, January 13, 2024, in the Valley Senior Living Center, Grand Forks, ND, with family by his side.
Dan was born in Crookston, MN on September 12, 1947, the son of Lloyd and Gladys (Ness) Wallace of Euclid, MN. He grew up on the family farm with his older sister, Cleo, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Euclid. After completing elementary school in Euclid, Dan attended the Northwest School of Agriculture High School in Crookston. During these years he also worked alongside his father as he began to learn what it took to run a successful farming operation. After graduating as a member of the Class of 1965 Dan enrolled at Bemidji (MN) State College. On July 11, 1969, he was united in marriage to Joyce Renae Hughes at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks, MN. Their union would be blessed by the births of Stephanie, Jon, and Matthew. The young couple made their first home in Crookston and in 1970 Dan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He then accepted a position as Industrial Arts teacher at Warren (MN) High School. Little did he know at the time that his teaching career would only last for one year due to the unexpected passing of his father, Lloyd, in 1971. Dan and Joyce then moved back from Warren to the rural Euclid family farmstead and his farming career was under way. To supplement his income Dan also worked for ASCS in Crookston measuring grain bins and doing repairs for a local auto-body shop. The years were busy, and life was good as their kids all enjoyed becoming “farmers”. They enjoyed tagging along with their dad as he went about doing whatever needed to be done to keep things working and his daughter proudly said, “My Dad could make and fix anything”. Sadly, Dan suffered a cerebral aneurysm and stroke in 1986 and at the age of 38 he would no longer be able to run the farm. He worked extremely hard in rehabilitation and literally had to relearn how to walk and talk. The love and support of Joyce and their growing family meant the world to him during these tough times. Amazingly, Dan eventually was able to return to farming, this time helping his friends and neighbors with spring planting and harvesting in the fall.
Throughout his life Dan enjoyed hunting near their farm, fishing at Lake of the Woods, and camping at Little Toad Lake Campground, near Detroit Lakes. Many wonderful memories were made, and tall tales told over the evening campfires. Teaching his grandsons to hunt and fish, doing projects with them in the shop, and watching them enjoy all the lake activities brought him great joy. Dan and Joyce enjoyed doing a bit of traveling, including an epic cruise to Alaska, and a few years of wintering in Mesa, AZ. Sadness came again as Dan suffered another stroke in early 2017. He fought as hard as he could but there was no coming back this time. The family finds their comfort in knowing that he is with his Lord in Heaven.
Dan will be lovingly remembered by Joyce, the love of his life for more than 54 years; their 3 children: Stephanie and Neil Landstrom of Horace, ND, Jon Wallace of Marina Del Rey, CA, and Matthew Wallace of Euclid, MN; 2 special grandsons, Levi Landstrom of Minneapolis and Carson Landstrom, a student at NDSU in Fargo; his sister and brother-in-law, Cleo and Paul Dillabough of Scottsdale, AZ; and from Joyce’s side of the family several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jerry Hughes (and special friend Dorothy) of East Grand Forks, MN, Kay Bjorlie of Edmond, OK, Deb Martin of Grand Forks, ND, Chuck and Jean Hughes of East Grand Forks, and Mark and Lou Ann Hughes of Otsego, MN; as well as much loved nieces and nephews; extended family; and many friends. Dan is reunited with his parents, Lloyd and Gladys; parents-in-law, Marie Hughes and Roy Hughes; sister-in-law, Charm Hughes; and brother-in-law, Peter Bjorlie.
Treasured be the memory of Daniel Arthur Wallace.
