What happened

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office said it was alerted to a medical situation at about 3:46 p.m.

The call came from a residence east of Dalton’s city limits.

Deputies responded and looked into what happened, officials said.

Investigators said the incident occurred in a detached garage on the property.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the injured man as Scott Johnson, 62.

Officials said Johnson was handling a 9mm handgun when he lost his grip.

The gun began to fall toward the floor, according to the report.

Johnson tried to grab it in midair, officials said.

During that motion, the trigger was pulled and the gun fired once.

The Sheriff’s Office said the bullet entered Johnson’s left hand.

Officials said the injury caused extensive damage.

Johnson’s wife drove him to Lake Region Hospital in a private vehicle.

The hospital is operated by Lake Region Healthcare.
