Crow Wing County (trfnews.i234.me) — Three vehicles broke through the ice on Pelican Lake over a 24-hour period. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the calls.
What happened on Pelican Lake
The Sheriff’s Office said it handled three separate incidents on Pelican Lake. The calls came in over the past 24 hours.
A Valley News Live report said the incidents occurred between Sunday evening and Monday. Reporter Bobby Falat said there was no immediate word on injuries.
Officials warned that lake ice can change fast. A safe-looking spot can fail nearby.
Why ice can give way
Ice thickness can vary across short distances. Currents, springs, and cracks can weaken ice.
Snow cover can hide thin spots. Inlets and outlets can also create open water.

Safety steps before you drive or ride
Check ice thickness often as you move. Do not trust old tracks or other people’s paths.
Use a spud bar, drill, or tape measure. Bring a buddy and tell someone your plan.
Wear a life jacket or a float suit. Keep ice picks and a throw rope within reach.
The National Weather Service says cars and small pickups need about 8 to 12 inches of ice. That is only a guide.
If a vehicle breaks through
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says escape time is short. Unbuckle and get out before the vehicle sinks.
Try the door first if it opens. If it will not open, use a window right away.
Move toward the direction you came from. That ice held you a moment ago.
Once out, roll away from the hole. Then crawl to stronger ice.
If you fall in on foot, review the DNR’s step-by-step self-rescue tips. Call 911 as soon as you can.
