CROW WING COUNTY, MN — (trfnews.i234.me) — A Crosslake woman convicted of torturing her three children and attempting to murder one of them will spend 39 years behind bars after sentencing in Crow Wing County District Court on Thursday, Aug. 7.
Jorden Nicole Borders, 34, was found guilty in June on 11 felony counts, including:
-
1 count – First-degree attempted murder
-
3 counts – Child torture
-
3 counts – Stalking
-
4 counts – Theft of medical costs
The Sentence
Judge Patricia Aanes ordered:
-
Attempted murder – 240 months (20 years)
-
Two counts of child torture – 114 months each
-
Sentences to run consecutively for a total of 468 months (39 years)
For the four theft counts, Borders received additional time — 21 to 23 months each — but those sentences will run concurrently with the major convictions. Restitution was set at $19,920.49.
In Minnesota, offenders serve two-thirds of their sentence in prison and the remaining third on supervised release.
The Abuse
Prosecutors said Borders fabricated and caused medical conditions in her children, forcing them to:
-
Wear casts and neck braces without injury
-
Endure unnecessary medical procedures
-
Suffer regular physical abuse
One child endured years of unexplained symptoms that doctors later suspected were caused by Borders. Two others were falsely diagnosed by her with brittle bone disease.
Attorney General Keith Ellison called the crimes “some of the most heinous and agonizing” he has seen, adding he prays for the children’s recovery.
Ongoing Risk
The court heard Borders:
-
Showed no remorse or empathy during the investigation
-
Tried to influence others, including her husband, during trial
-
Violated court orders by seeking unsupervised access to minors while awaiting trial
Prosecutors argued she remains an “imminent risk” to children and pushed for the maximum allowable sentence.
Borders was first charged in November 2022 after a child maltreatment investigation. She and her husband later terminated their parental rights. The three children are now in the care of adoptive families.
