Clay County (trfnews.i234.me) – Authorities have released the names of the two men killed and the officers involved in the August 11th officer-involved shooting at a Moorhead apartment building.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), the deceased were identified as Nathan Heiberg, 42, of Moorhead, and Lucas Heiberg, 41, of Grand Forks. The identification came from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The officers involved in the shooting were also named. They are Sgt. Michael Anderson, Sgt. Kyle Seehusen and Officer Tyler Seehusen of the Fargo Police Department. All three are members of the Red River Valley SWAT Team and are currently on critical incident leave.
Incident Background
Police say the shooting occurred after Moorhead officers responded to a report of domestic assault and an order for protection violation. A female victim told officers that she was physically assaulted by both Nathan and Lucas Heiberg. She also reported that two children, ages 5 and 6, remained inside the apartment with the men.
When officers attempted to make contact, Nathan and Lucas did not respond. As officers tried to force the apartment door open, a firearm was discharged from inside. Police then retreated, evacuated nearby apartments, and called for additional assistance.
The Red River Valley SWAT Team later entered the apartment, at which point shots were fired. Both Nathan and Lucas were struck by gunfire. Despite medical aid at the scene, Lucas was pronounced dead inside the apartment, and Nathan died later at a hospital.
Investigation Details
The BCA confirmed that all three Fargo officers discharged their firearms during the incident. Two firearms were recovered inside the apartment. Portions of the event were captured on body-worn cameras.
The Moorhead Police Department requested that the BCA conduct an independent investigation. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the Clay County Attorney’s Office for review, without a charging recommendation.
The two children present during the incident were found unharmed and are safe.
