Clay County, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – A convicted sex offender in Clay County is facing a felony charge after disappearing from law enforcement oversight for 22 days.
Luis Alberto Cardenas, 35, convicted in 2017 for 2nd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct with a child under 13, is required to register as a predatory offender in Minnesota. Being homeless, Cardenas was specifically instructed to check in weekly with local law enforcement.
Despite a 41-minute meeting with Lt. Detloff on April 9, 2025, where these rules were explained in detail, Cardenas failed to report for over three weeks. He finally showed up at the Clay County Law Enforcement Center on June 5, 2025, leading to a charge of Failure to Register, a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
This is yet another reminder of the critical need for strict monitoring of high-risk offenders.
