Moorhead (trfnews.i234.me) — On May 7, 2025, Jamal Ahmed, 36, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder without intent while committing a felony in the death of 37-year-old Franky Torres. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on July 24, 2024, in the 900 block of 18th Street South in Moorhead.
According to court documents, Torres was attacking a man he believed had sexually assaulted a friend earlier that night. Ahmed, a mutual acquaintance of both men, emerged from an apartment building with a firearm and shot Torres in the head. Torres was transported to Sanford Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
During the sentencing hearing, Torres’ family members expressed their grief and dissatisfaction with the plea agreement, which they felt did not deliver adequate justice. Ahmed acknowledged the pain caused and expressed remorse for his actions. The judge noted that the 15-year sentence was at the high end of the sentencing guidelines for someone with Ahmed’s criminal history score.
