Defense Cites Public Bias and Media Coverage

On March 26, 2025, attorneys Michael Cohen and Alicia Linzmeier filed a motion on behalf of 17-year-old Carson Peters-Berger to relocate his trial outside Chippewa County. The defense argues that extensive media coverage, social media commentary, and public memorials have created an environment where a fair trial is unattainable. The motion highlights visible tributes like “Justice for Lily Peters” signs and purple-themed memorials near the courthouse as potential influences on jurors.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Peters-Berger faces serious charges:

  • First-Degree Intentional Homicide

  • First-Degree Sexual Assault with Great Bodily Harm

  • First-Degree Child Sexual Assault involving a victim under 13

Initially charged as a juvenile, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals ruled in September 2024 that he would be tried as an adult, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses.

Background of the Case

On April 24, 2022, Lily Peters was reported missing after failing to return home from her aunt’s residence. Her body was discovered the next morning in a wooded area in Chippewa Falls. Investigations revealed that she had been sexually assaulted and murdered. Peters-Berger, her cousin, was arrested two days later and has been held on a $1 million bail since.

Upcoming Court Dates and Potential Trial Delays

Peters-Berger’s next court appearance is a motion hearing scheduled for June 9, 2025. Due to court calendar constraints, the trial may be postponed until 2026.
