Cass Lake Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Fatal Stabbing
Cass Lake (trfnews.i234.me) — A Cass Lake man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of another man in Beltrami County last June.
According to court records, Avery Owen Cadwell of Cass Lake has been sentenced to 300 months (25 years) in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a man identified in court documents as C.B. The sentencing took place this past week in Beltrami County District Court.
The case began on June 15, 2025, when deputies from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home at 1161 Porcupine Road Southeast after receiving a report of a stabbing. Deputies found an adult male victim without a pulse. Despite emergency efforts, the victim was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. His body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, where it was determined that the cause of death was a single stab wound to the chest that penetrated the heart.
Investigators identified Cadwell as the suspect. Witnesses reported that earlier in the day, Cadwell had expressed anger toward the victim, believing he was owed $100. When he later saw the victim passing by on an ATV, Cadwell allegedly said he was “going to get” the man. Shortly after, witnesses saw Cadwell confront and stab the victim. The victim attempted to drive away on his ATV but collapsed nearby, saying, “That person stabbed me,” according to statements included in the probable cause report.
Deputies located Cadwell near his residence on Porcupine Road after a brief search using a drone and police canine. He was arrested and later told investigators he thought he had only assaulted the victim and not killed him. He also admitted that the stabbing was not in self-defense.
Cadwell was sentenced to 25 years in prison and will serve his term under the Minnesota Department of Corrections. The sentence reflects the severity of the offense and Cadwell’s guilty plea.
