Cass County, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – A Backus woman is facing felony drug charges after authorities say she picked up a package containing methamphetamine from the local post office in what appears to be part of an ongoing interstate drug operation.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Cass County District Court, 46-year-old Christa Joyce Maus was arrested on October 29, 2018, after investigators received tips that she and another woman, Deb Maus, were receiving meth shipments through both USPS and FedEx.
On the morning of the arrest, Investigator Cyr and a U.S. Postal Inspector observed Maus approach the Backus post office from an alley just after 10:00 a.m. She retrieved a suspicious manila envelope addressed to her at a P.O. box. Authorities stopped her outside, identified her, and received her consent to inspect the package and her phone.
Maus admitted the envelope contained methamphetamine. A search of the package revealed a small zip-lock bag containing a white crystalline substance that tested positive for meth. The total weight with packaging was approximately eight grams.
She also admitted to regularly sending money to a man identified as Daniel Wood in California, who would then ship her meth in return.
Maus has been charged with Fifth-Degree Controlled Substance Possession, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
