At about 1:25 p.m., dispatch received a report of a boat that struck rocks and the shoreline. The crash site was on the south shore near Walker City Park. Deputies and first responders arrived within minutes.
They found a 2016 Regency pontoon on the shore with heavy damage. A 59-year-old woman from Cass Lake was located inside the craft, unresponsive. Crews removed her from the boat and began life-saving care.
Resuscitation efforts continued during transport to the Walker airport. She was pronounced deceased on arrival. Officials said she was the only person on board at the time of the crash. Her name will be released after family notification.
An autopsy is scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office. Investigators are reviewing the vessel, weather, and shoreline conditions. They are also checking for mechanical issues and medical factors. No other injuries were reported.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet said what led to the impact with the rocks. More information will be released when reports are complete. Anyone who saw the incident is asked to contact local authorities.
Leech Lake draws many boaters in late summer. Safety officials urge operators to slow down near rocky shores and park areas. The Minnesota DNR lists required gear and safe speed guidance for inland waters. Operators should wear life jackets, keep a proper lookout, and avoid alcohol.
Walker City Park sits on the south shore and sees heavy use on warm days. Visitors should follow posted rules and be alert for emergency crews. Please give space to investigators working along the shoreline.
This is a developing story. TRF News will post updates as officials release new details.
