Cass County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Valley City man was seriously injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash south of Casselton. Authorities say alcohol played a role in the collision.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 3:48 p.m. on August 14, 2025, near mile marker 73 on Highway 18.

Investigators say 48-year-old Kelly Sund was driving a 2001 GMC Jimmy northbound when he attempted to turn west onto 19th Street South. He failed to yield and struck a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500, which was traveling southbound.

Sund, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. Officials say he was later arrested for DUI and cited for turning in front of approaching traffic.

The driver of the Sierra, 37-year-old Austen Ellenson of Horace, was wearing his seat belt and suffered minor injuries. He was treated at the scene.

Responding agencies included the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Casselton Fire Department, and Casselton Ambulance.

Sund faces charges of DUI (Class B Misdemeanor) and failure to yield (moving violation). The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
