Cass County (trfnews.i234.me) — Thomas G. Newman of Bemidji is facing new charges after a traffic stop in Cass Lake on Sept. 12.

Officers stopped Newman for a traffic violation in Cass Lake. He failed a field sobriety test at the scene. A preliminary breath test registered 0.84, which officials say was more than twice the legal limit.

While officers were taking Newman to jail, he made violent threats toward them. He allegedly said, “I hope I run into you again with a baseball bat because I’ll f you up.” He also said he would smash their faces with a baseball bat after his release.

Prosecutors charged Newman with felony threats of violence. He also faces a misdemeanor DWI charge. Court papers show the charges were filed after the stop and the statements made during transport.

Felony threats carry serious penalties if proved. Misdemeanor DWI can also bring fines and jail time. The case will move through the Cass County court in the coming weeks.

Authorities did not release further details about Newman’s criminal history. They also did not name the officers involved in the stop. The investigation remains under the jurisdiction of local prosecutors.

Legal experts advise people arrested for DWI to avoid making threats. Such statements can lead to added charges. They can also affect how prosecutors view a case during charging and sentencing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Cass County authorities. Public tips can help complete the record in court filings.

For general information on Minnesota law, see the state statutes and DWI resources. Minnesota Statutes and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety offer guidance on charges and penalties.
