The Canadian Pacific (CP) Holiday Train is happy to be back for its 24th year, supporting food banks and food shelves across their network by raising money, food, and awareness for food insecurity issues. The CP Holiday Train will be in the area on Thursday, December 15. It will be in Mahnomen at 4:20 p.m., Plummer at 6:00 p.m., and Thief River Falls at 7:30 p.m. The Holiday Train is a great way to get into the festive spirit. The train is about 1,000 feet long with 14 brightly decorated rail cars.

Each car is decorated with hundreds of thousands of LED lights and holiday designs celebrating the spirit of the giving season. Visitors can enjoy free musical performances at each stop, and your food or cash donations will benefit the local community. Please note: You don’t actually get to ride the Holiday Train. It’s more of a pop-up concert experience. Or as the railway says on its FAQ page, “A typical Holiday Train event goes something like this: The train arrives and pulls to a safe stop in front of the crowd. The stage door lowers, and the band opens with its first song, followed by a brief presentation with the local food bank officials and other dignitaries on stage. Once the presentation is done, the band resumes the show, singing a mix of traditional and modern holiday-themed songs and popular original songs. After the final song, the boxcar door closes, and the train is on its way to the next stop.”

Holiday train shows are free to attend, but CP asks attendees to bring cash or non-perishable food donations if they’re able. Local food shelves will set up collection stations at each event, and all donations will stay with local food banks. Because local food shelves buy food at a discount, cash donations can go further than food donations to help those in need.
