Beltrami County, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – A family feud turned violent on October 29, 2024, in Cass Lake as Mya Susan Wakonabo, 22, was charged with felony third-degree assault after allegedly beating her sister so severely that the victim suffered multiple facial fractures.

Officers from the Leech Lake Tribal Police and Bemidji Police responded to the chaotic scene near the Mission Community Center. The victim, M.W., was found slumped over and covered in blood, with swollen eyes, lacerations, and visible bruising. She told officers that Wakonabo had assaulted her during an argument about a miscarriage.

Medical records confirmed substantial bodily harm, including multiple facial fractures. Witnesses and police noted a prolonged, brutal beating. Wakonabo later claimed self-defense, stating her sister started the fight, but admitted to hitting her.

Wakonabo was arrested and charged under Minnesota Statute 609.223.1, which carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison or a $10,000 fine.
