Beltrami County (trfnews.i234.me) – A shocking family fight turned criminal when police responded to a violent altercation between two sisters that left one with multiple facial fractures.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Beltrami County District Court on October 29, 2024, at approximately 7:26 a.m., Leech Lake Tribal Police were dispatched to the Mission Community Center area in Cass Lake following a report of a woman screaming.
Officers discovered M.W., the sister of the accused, Mya Susan Wakonabo, slumped over and covered in blood, her eyes swollen shut. The victim alleged that Wakonabo became enraged during an argument about a miscarriage and launched a brutal assault, punching, kicking, and beating her for approximately 20 minutes. Medical records later confirmed multiple facial fractures and widespread bruising.
Wakonabo, 23, was later located and admitted to hitting her sister, but claimed it was in self-defense. Witnesses gave conflicting accounts, with one noting the victim initially tried to pull Wakonabo from a vehicle window by her hair.
Wakonabo has been charged with felony third-degree assault, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
