Beltrami County (trfnews.i234.me) – A violent fight between sisters in Cass Lake has led to felony assault charges for Mya Susan Wakonabo, age 22, after her sister was left with multiple facial fractures and severe injuries.

Police were called to the Mission Community Center area early on October 29, 2024, after reports of a woman screaming and a suspicious vehicle. Officers discovered M.W., Wakonabo’s sister, severely beaten with swollen eyes, a bloodied face, and visible bruising across her body. M.W. claimed that the fight was sparked by comments about Wakonabo’s miscarriage and that Wakonabo attacked her for up to 20 minutes with punches and kicks.

Wakonabo told officers she was acting in self-defense, claiming M.W. initiated the altercation by pulling her hair. However, officers noted abrasions on Wakonabo’s knuckles and obtained medical records showing the victim sustained several facial fractures.

Wakonabo is now charged with 3rd Degree Assault – Substantial Bodily Harm, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.
