Julian Sands’ legacy

Sands began his acting career in the early 1980s with supporting roles in movies including “Oxford Blues” and “The Killing Fields.” He played the romantic lead in the Merchant Ivory film “A Room with a View” and starred as the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in the psychological horror film “Gothic.” Another starring horror role came in “Warlock,” and Sands returned to reprise his role in the film’s first of two sequels. In “Arachnophobia,” Sands played an entomologist who unwittingly sent a deadly spider to the U.S., and in “Boxing Helena,” he played a surgeon with a horrifying obsession with a woman. Another prominent role came in “Leaving Las Vegas,” in which he played Latvian pimp Yuri Butsov. Sands’ other movies included “Naked Lunch,” “Ocean’s Thirteen,” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

On television, Sands provided the voice of Valmont in the cartoon “Jackie Chan Adventures.” He played terrorist Vladimir Bierko in season five of “24” and portrayed Jor-El, Superman’s father, on “Smallville.” He had further recurring roles on shows including “Ghost Whisperer,” “Lipstick Jungle,” and “Crossbones,” as well as making guest appearances on such programs as “Castle,” “Dexter,” and “The Blacklist.”

Sands on starring in “Warlock”

“I’m surprised by people who come up to me who had to have been 5 or 6 years old when it came out, saying that their mum or their dad took them to see it. And it’s, like, ‘What were they thinking?!’ [Laughs.] But for me it was like a Shakespearean experience. The warlock himself was a classical, whimsical stage villain in a rich, nuanced way. His use of language, his smile, his movement, his random wickedness… It was a great treat to play.” –from a 2019 interview for Decider
