Crow Wing County, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — An 18-year-old motorcyclist was hospitalized following a collision with a Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Department squad vehicle on Thursday evening, April 10, 2025. The incident occurred just after 7:00 p.m. on County Road 45 near Cook Road, south of Brainerd.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the squad vehicle, a 2020 Ford Explorer driven by 25-year-old Deputy Aidan James Bartels of Baxter, Minnesota, was traveling southbound on County Road 45 and initiated a U-turn near Cook Road. Simultaneously, a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle, also heading southbound and operated by 18-year-old Dakota William Beehner of Brainerd, collided with the squad car during the maneuver.
Benner sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Brainerd hospital for treatment. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Authorities have confirmed that alcohol was not a factor for either driver.
The Minnesota State Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

In Minnesota, motorcycle riders are required by law to wear helmets only if they are under 18 years of age or operating with a learner’s permit. However, wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of head injuries in the event of a crash.
