Criminal Charges Filed
After seven years of public outcry, Michelle Skroch, a former nurse at Beltrami County Jail, has been charged in the 2018 in-custody death of Hardel Sherrell. The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office has filed felony charges against Skroch, including:
- Second-Degree Manslaughter
- Criminal Neglect – Knowingly Depriving an Inmate of Care
- Criminal Neglect – Extended Period of Time
What Happened?
On September 2, 2018, Hardel Sherrell died in custody after a week of severe medical symptoms that were allegedly ignored by jail medical staff. Sherrell suffered from high blood pressure and progressing numbness throughout his body. Despite multiple pleas for medical attention, no intervention was made.
A later autopsy revealed Sherrell had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)—a treatable neurological disorder. Medical experts state that timely treatment could have saved his life.
Who is Michelle Skroch?
Skroch was a nurse and medical technician at Beltrami County Jail at the time of Sherrell’s death. Prosecutors allege she failed to provide basic care, exacerbating his condition and leading to his preventable death.
Legal Consequences
If convicted, Skroch could face:
- Up to 10 years in prison for second-degree manslaughter
- Additional time for the criminal neglect charges
The case has sparked national outrage over medical neglect in correctional facilities.
