Bismarck, Burleigh County (trfnews.i234.me) – Police are seeking a woman for questioning. They are investigating a fatal stabbing.
What happened
Police were called around 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2026. Officers went to an apartment in the 1000 block of Porter Avenue.
Inside, they found John Leier, 51. Police said he had a stab wound to the chest. Officers gave aid until paramedics arrived.
Leier was taken to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead. Police said his family has been notified.
Investigators said this appears to be a targeted incident. Police said there is no sign of an ongoing public threat.

Person of interest
Investigators reviewed video from the area. Police said the video shows two women leaving after the stabbing.
Police later located one of the women. The second woman has not been found. Police want to question her as a person of interest.
- Height: about 5’2” to 5’8”.
- Build: small in stature.
- Clothing: faded jeans and a patterned sweater.
- Other items: a hooded jacket, scarf, and boots.
Police did not release the woman’s name. Police said the investigation is active and ongoing.

Police are asking for video from nearby homes and businesses. They also want footage from travel routes near Porter Avenue.
