Betty A. Bridges, a cherished actress and influential acting teacher, has passed away at the age of 80. Bridges, who gained recognition for her guest roles on popular TV shows, was also a dedicated educator and manager.
Bridges began her acting career in the mid-1970s, around the same time her son, Todd Bridges, was rising to fame as a child actor. While she never had a breakout starring role, she became a familiar and respected face on television. Notably, she appeared alongside her son on the iconic series “Diff’rent Strokes.” Her extensive TV credits also include memorable roles on “Good Times,” where she played a model for J.J., and guest spots on “Charlie’s Angels,” “Flamingo Road,” “Hill Street Blues,” “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Ally McBeal,” “NYPD Blue,” and “Scrubs.” Her final television appearance was in a 2014 episode of “2 Broke Girls.”
Beyond her acting career, Betty Bridges was a passionate teacher and manager. She co-founded Kane Bridge Academy, an acting school that helped launch the careers of notable actors including Regina King, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, and Marcus Chong.
Bridges was also known for her dedication to her family. As Todd Bridges faced challenges with addiction and legal issues in the 1980s and early ’90s, Betty was a steadfast supporter in his journey to recovery. Her candid efforts to help her son overcome his struggles highlighted her commitment to family.
In her memory, her family has requested donations to the Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation, which supports those in recovery from substance use disorders.

“Actress Betty Bridges passed away. This is a scene from my favorite episode of ‘Good Times,’ where she played a model for J.J. to paint as a present for her husband. She will be missed.”
