HINES, Minn (trfnews.i234.me) – On December 6, 2024, the Animal Humane Society (AHS) and Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence on the 16700 block of Aksarben Lane NE, near Hines, Minnesota. The operation aimed to rescue over 250 animals reportedly living in substandard conditions. Upon arrival, authorities found 64 animals—comprising 35 dogs and 29 cats—in poor health, suffering from malnutrition, eye infections, respiratory diseases, parasites, and various injuries.
During earlier visits, officials observed approximately 202 cats and 50 dogs confined in cramped, unsanitary cages, with limited access to food and clean water. Some dogs appeared emaciated, with injuries consistent with fighting, and were seen consuming feces due to lack of proper nutrition.
Upon executing the search warrant, authorities noted that 170 animals were unaccounted for. They discovered numerous animal bones and bone fragments in an ash pile on the property, indicating possible disposal of deceased animals.
Debra Marshall, 65, and Douglas Erickson, 49, residents of the property, were arrested and each charged with 10 felony counts of animal mistreatment. They are accused of neglecting the animals under their care, leading to severe health issues among the surviving pets.
The rescued animals are currently receiving medical treatment and rehabilitation under the care of AHS. Due to their compromised health, it is anticipated that several weeks will be required before any of the animals are deemed fit for adoption.
