Baxter, Crow Wing County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Brainerd woman faces a felony theft charge. Police say it happened at the Baxter Walmart.
Sasha Mae-Susan Mattson, 41, is accused of skip-scanning at self-checkout. Prosecutors say it happened during ten store visits. The dates run from January 5 to February 20, 2026.
Police response on Feb. 20
A store report brought police to Walmart on February 20, 2026, the complaint says. Loss prevention staff said Mattson did not scan many items. Staff said she tried to leave with unpaid goods worth $233.70.
Staff stopped her near the exit, the complaint says. Police then took over the investigation. Officers reviewed receipts and store records, according to the filing.
Nine earlier incidents are alleged
After the February stop, staff checked past transactions, the complaint says. Loss prevention staff reported nine earlier incidents. They said Mattson scanned some items each time. They also said she placed other items in her cart unpaid.
The complaint lists losses that ranged from about $10 to more than $220 per visit. Prosecutors say the total loss was $1,182.86. That figure covers all ten visits.

Charge and court process
Mattson is charged with felony theft in the Minnesota district court. Theft charges are covered under Minnesota Statute 609.52. The law sets penalty levels by the total value.
A criminal complaint is a formal court filing. It lists the charge and key facts. A judge can set release terms. The case may end by plea or trial.
Public case records can be searched online. Readers can use Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO). It is run by the Minnesota Judicial Branch.
Walmart and self-checkout
The complaint focuses on self-checkout use. Skip-scanning is a common term in retail cases. It describes scanning some items and skipping others. Stores often rely on video and receipt checks.
Mattson is presumed innocent in court. The charge is an allegation at this stage.
