Bagley, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) A man is dead after a Clearwater County deputy shot him during a pursuit on Thursday, November 13. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating the incident.
According to a news release, the event started shortly after noon in Bagley. A deputy was patrolling near a convenience store on the 1300 block of Central Street West. The deputy saw a man at a gas pump and recognized that he had a felony warrant. The deputy tried to take the man into custody.
The sheriff’s office says a physical struggle began. The man broke free, got into his vehicle, and fled. The deputy followed as the suspect drove east on U.S. Highway 2. Other deputies and Bagley police joined the chase. The suspect crossed into the westbound lanes several times. Officers tried blocking the vehicle, but those attempts failed.
The suspect then drove through two private yards before officers were able to stop the vehicle. As law enforcement tried to remove him, the suspect fired a flare-type weapon at them. Officials say one deputy then fired their weapon. The suspect was hit.
Medical crews from Bagley Sanford Ambulance attempted lifesaving care. The suspect died at the scene. One deputy had a minor injury.
Body cameras were active during the event. The Minnesota BCA is now reviewing the case. The agency investigates all officer-involved shootings in the state. More details may be released after the review. You can learn more about the BCA’s investigative process at the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website: dps.mn.gov.
Officials have not released the names of the suspect or the deputy.
