Backus, Cass County (trfnews.i234.me) – A Backus man with a lengthy drug history is facing new felony charges after methamphetamine was found during a probation-related contact.
According to court records, on June 23, 2025, Deputy Alex Brown of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Scott Alan Orth, age 65, was in possession of meth. Orth was already under probation supervision for a prior case. Upon contact, Orth agreed to a drug test but was seen discarding a Montego cigarette pack—a method he was previously known to use to hide drugs.
Deputy Brown retrieved the pack and found 1.71 grams of a crystal-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. Orth was arrested and booked for felony 5th-degree drug possession.
Orth has multiple prior drug convictions, including third and fifth-degree controlled substance offenses in Cass and Mille Lacs Counties, and is currently under supervision for a DWI involving drugs.
