Austin Kalsnes, 32 of Fargo, ND passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, after a long struggle with mental health. Although he had overwhelming support from his family, ultimately, the system failed him.

A visitation and prayer service will be held Sunday, January 31, 2021, from 5:00-7:00 PM, with prayer service beginning at 6:30 PM.  Public visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 1:30 PM on Monday, February 1, 2021, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN, with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 1:30 PM; Father Rick Lambert presiding. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Austin Glenn Kalsnes was born September 22, 1988, in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Glenn and Diane (Mutnansky) Kalsnes. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN. Austin attended Challenger Elementary School, Franklin Middle School, and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 2007. He then attended Minnesota State University Moorhead where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

While in high school, Austin worked at Paint & Glass Interiors in Thief River Falls for his uncle Jarrod. Following graduation from MSUM, Austin went to work at Friendship, Inc. in Fargo as a Direct Support Professional for the developmentally disabled. Austin’s work was primarily caring for individuals in-home, getting them involved in community activities such as dances, shopping, movies, church services, and vacations. He worked his way up to a supervisory position.

Austin was very compassionate. If someone needed help, he would be the first to volunteer. He had an easy-going nature, was fun, friendly, loving, kind, very laid back, and always had a smile on his face. He was also lovingly known as Cricket, Austin from Boston, Asti Spumante, Stone Cold, and most commonly, Austy.

He loved ketchup!

Austin was a sports enthusiast. He was an excellent player and fan of basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, and many other sports. Austin was an avid college and professional sports aficionado — especially Minnesota sports teams.

Austin loved working with electronics and technology. He enjoyed building computers, gaming, and research. No matter his state of mind, he was always on top of current information, trends, and what was going on in the world.

Survivors include his loving mother, Diane Kalsnes of Fargo, ND; father, Glenn Kalsnes of Tampa, FL; brother, Aaron Kalsnes of Tampa, FL; sister, Ali (Brandon) McBride of Minot, ND; nieces, Bryleigh & Iliana McBride; grandmothers, Theresa “Nanny” Mutnansky of Bemidji, MN and Joyce (Kalsnes) Olson of Thief River Falls, MN; aunts and uncles, Paulette (Tim) Kassa of Bemidji, MN, Joe Mutnansky of Goodridge, MN, Godmother,  Jane (Cub) Storlie of Cass Lake, MN, Mary Herried of Bemidji, MN, Bonnie (Rodger) Njaa of Wannaska, MN, Patty (Stanley) Skibicki of Goodridge, MN, Jodi (Joe) Mayo of Fargo, ND, Paula (PKY) Mutnansky of Bemidji, MN, Godparents,Val (Pat) Kelly of Shoreview, MN, Kenny (Julie) Kalsnes of Thief River Falls, MN, and Jarrod (Berta) Kalsnes of Thief River Falls, MN; and approximately 432 cousins, LOL!

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Paul “Papa” Mutnansky and Harold Kalsnes, uncle, Jim Mutnansky, aunt, Janeen Kalsnes, and cousin, Matthew Mutnansky.

Austin will forever be missed. May his memory be blessed.
