MOORHEAD, MN (trfnews.i234.me) — On Monday, Nov. 25, a 17-year-old student was taken into custody at Moorhead High School Career Academy after being found with a firearm. The incident began earlier that morning when Moorhead Police responded to a report of a stolen handgun from an apartment in south Moorhead. The 25-year-old resident of the apartment informed officers that the firearm was unsecured in a bedroom and reported missing.

Police attempted to locate the suspect at their residence but were later notified that the individual was at the Career Academy. At approximately 10:25 a.m., a Moorhead school resource officer apprehended the student, who had the firearm concealed in a bag. Authorities confirmed that no threats of violence had been made, and the motive is under investigation.

The teen is being held at the Clay County Regional Detention Center and faces felony charges for theft and possession of a firearm on school property. Police are also reviewing the unsecured firearm’s storage for potential charges against the gun owner.

Moorhead Superintendent Brandon Lunak commended law enforcement and school staff for their quick response, emphasizing the district’s commitment to student and staff safety through established protocols.
