Lake of the Woods, MN (trfnews.i234.me) — In a remarkable turn of events at the annual sturgeon tournament hosted by Sportsman’s Lodge, angler Frank Zampa landed a colossal lake sturgeon measuring 78.25 inches. This catch potentially surpasses Minnesota’s current catch-and-release record of 78 inches, set in 2019 by Darren Troseth on the St. Croix River.
The tournament, a staple event on Lake of the Woods, witnessed heightened excitement as Zampa’s catch was verified on-site, measuring a quarter-inch longer than the standing record. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requires that a new record exceed the existing one by at least ¼ inch to qualify.
Lake sturgeon, known for their impressive size and longevity, can grow over 7 feet long and weigh up to 240 pounds. Zampa’s catch not only showcases the thriving sturgeon population in Lake of the Woods but also highlights the effectiveness of conservation efforts in the region.
The DNR has yet to officially confirm Zampa’s catch as the new state record. The certification process involves a thorough review of submitted evidence, including measurements, photographs, and witness statements. If validated, this would mark a significant milestone in Minnesota’s angling history.
