Aneta Standoff Ends Peacefully in Nelson County
ANETA, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) – A five-hour standoff in Aneta, North Dakota, ended peacefully on Saturday afternoon with no injuries reported. According to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, the situation began when a man inside a home threatened to harm himself.
Deputies responded to the scene and discovered the man was armed. When he moved into a nearby garage, officers backed off to ensure safety and called for assistance from a crisis intervention specialist. Multiple agencies, including the Steele County Sheriff’s Office and the North Dakota Highway Patrol, assisted during the standoff.
Authorities say the standoff lasted approximately five to six hours. Negotiations continued throughout the afternoon as law enforcement worked to de-escalate the situation. At about 3:30 p.m., the man surrendered without incident. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation, where he is receiving care for apparent mental health concerns.
Officials said the incident highlights the importance of crisis intervention and coordination among agencies during mental health emergencies. No shots were fired, and no one in the surrounding area was injured.
Residents in Aneta were asked to stay away from the area during the standoff, but have since been cleared to return to normal activities. The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office thanked local responders for their teamwork and patience in resolving the situation safely.
