Allan Okins, age 91 of East Grand Forks, MN passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
Allan Wallace Okins was born on January 10, 1933, in Revere, MN. He was the eleventh of 16 children born to Charley and Edith (Wise) Okins. Al graduated from Lamberton, MN High School in 1951 and enlisted in the US Navy. After completion of his original service commitment, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota where he entered the US Naval ROTC program. During his time at the University of MN he met and married Rosemary Rolzinski, originally from Minto, ND on April 27, 1957, in Minneapolis, MN.
Al and Rosemary located to East Grand Forks, MN in 1963 where they made their lifelong home.
Al was originally employed as a pharmaceutical representative but was more locally known when he and Rosie bought and operated East Grand Floral and the Giant Wash Laundromat in East Grand Forks, building upon their roots in the community that they love.
In addition to their business, Al found time to serve on the ISD 595 school board for 8 years, he was a Charter Member of Valley Golf Course (where he proudly had a hole in one in April 2000), served as a board member of the Valley Golf Club, 70 year member of the American Legion, was very active in local and state politics, volunteered at Campbell Library for over 10 years, was a Scout Master, member of the Blue Line Club and the list goes on. Al was passionate about the importance of volunteering and giving of yourself in service to others.
During his own time, Al loved to play golf, bowling league, local card club and was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, hunting and camping with family and friends at Cass Lake.
Al is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rosemary and their four children: Tom (Terry), Tim, Diane Baxter and John (Julie). Seven grandchildren, nine Great-grandchildren, 3 sisters and many nieces and nephews.
Final resting place is at Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks, MN following a private family service.
