Aitkin County (trfnews.i234.me) — A McGregor, Minnesota man with a violent criminal past is now facing new felony charges following a terrifying domestic incident.

According to court documents, Patrick Jay Sullivan, of McGregor, was denied entry into a residence by a female victim for two consecutive days. In response, Sullivan allegedly told the woman he “wanted to choke her until she was dead.” Deputies arrived at the scene on April 30th, but when they attempted to arrest Sullivan, he violently struggled with them before being subdued.

Sullivan is now formally charged with two serious felonies: Threats of Violence and Felony Domestic Assault. Authorities have confirmed that Sullivan has a history of violent behavior, with two prior assault convictions and a conviction for Fourth-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct already on his record.

Given his criminal background and the disturbing nature of the recent threats, Sullivan’s case is expected to draw close attention from the courts and the public alike.

  • Minnesota defines felony domestic assault as an assault against a household or family member, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

  • The threat of violence can be charged separately under Minnesota Statute 609.713, and is classified as a felony if made with the intent to terrorize.

  • Fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in Minnesota typically involves non-consensual sexual contact under certain coercive circumstances, and is a felony offense.

  • Studies show that repeat domestic violence offenders are significantly more likely to escalate their behavior over time.

  • In Aitkin County alone, domestic-related offenses have been a persistent issue, prompting ongoing community outreach and prevention efforts.

  • Struggling with arresting officers can lead to additional charges such as obstructing the legal process, potentially enhancing penalties.
