On January 8, 2025, at approximately 4:03 PM, Barnes County authorities received a report of a reckless driver. The vehicle, a Nissan passenger car, was observed traveling eastbound on Interstate 94 (I-94), exhibiting erratic behavior such as swerving across lanes and abruptly braking in front of other motorists.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) responded and located the Nissan near mile marker 320 on I-94. Troopers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, continuing eastbound. To mitigate the situation, a trooper deployed a Stinger spike strip near mile marker 346, successfully deflating three of the vehicle’s tires. Despite this, the driver exited the interstate at the Sheyenne Street exit and went into West Fargo. Considering public safety, NDHP terminated the pursuit at that point.
Shortly thereafter, another NDHP trooper spotted the Nissan eastbound on I-94 near mile marker 347. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Makayla Ryan from Worthington, Minnesota, was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Cass County Jail.
Ryan faces multiple charges:
- Felony reckless endangerment
- Felony fleeing a police officer
- Misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs (DUI-Drugs)
- Infraction for possession of THC paraphernalia
The NDHP received assistance from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department and the West Fargo Police Department during this incident. No injuries were reported.
