FARGO, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) – On December 24, 2024, President Joe Biden signed the Stop Campus Hazing Act into law, a measure co-led by Senator Amy Klobuchar. The law requires universities to include hazing incidents in their annual safety reports to improve transparency and prevention efforts on campuses.
The legislation was inspired by the October 19, 2021, hazing incident at the University of Missouri involving freshman Danny Santulli, who was pledging to the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. During a pledge event, Santulli was handed a bottle of liquor and later given beer through a funnel. After being left unconscious on a couch, fraternity members eventually noticed he was not breathing and rushed him to the emergency room, where he suffered cardiac arrest. The incident resulted in severe brain damage, leaving Santulli unable to walk, talk, or see.
Following the incident, the University of Missouri shut down the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Danny’s parents, Tom and Mary Santulli, became advocates for anti-hazing laws and played a key role in the passage of the Stop Campus Hazing Act. They are now working on a proposal for “Danny’s Law,” which aims to grant immunity to individuals who report hazing emergencies.
