Narrative:
On December 23, 2024, at approximately 3:21 PM Central Time, a single-vehicle rollover crash occurred on Interstate 94 westbound near mile marker 351 in Fargo, North Dakota. A 2016 Ford Explorer, driven by 43-year-old Fatuma Osman of Moorhead, Minnesota, was traveling westbound on I-94 under poor road conditions due to accumulating snow and ice. Osman was driving too fast for the conditions, lost control of the vehicle, and entered the north ditch of the interstate. The vehicle traveled through the ditch and struck multiple trees along a fence dividing I-94 and a Fargo frontage road before rolling onto its roof and coming to rest in the north ditch.
The driver, along with front-seat passenger Sumago Hassan and a juvenile male passenger, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. All occupants were transported by Sanford Ambulance to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo for treatment.
Following the rollover crash, multiple property damage crashes occurred at the same location. These secondary incidents were attributed to motorists diverting their attention to the crash scene and not focusing on the roadway, leading to rear-end collisions or vehicles leaving the roadway to avoid collisions. A total of four additional motorists were involved in property damage crashes until emergency crews arrived to provide traffic control and assistance.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reminds motorists to reduce speed during adverse weather conditions, maintain a safe following distance, and keep attention on the roadway. This injury crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol. The name of the juvenile passenger will not be released.
