Cass Lake, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – Arthur Jones, a 48-year-old resident of Cass Lake, Minnesota, has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of his brother, AJ Jones, during an altercation on August 17, 2024.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Leech Lake Tribal Police and the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a domestic disturbance call at approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 17 in Ten Lake Township. Upon arrival, officers observed Arthur Jones holding his brother in a chokehold. Despite multiple commands to release the hold and the deployment of a Taser, Jones did not comply. He reportedly stated, “he’s already dead.”
After officers physically separated the individuals, AJ Jones was found unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel transported him to the Cass Lake Indian Health Service Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was consistent with strangulation.
Arthur Jones was taken into custody on August 17, 2024, and is currently held at the Beltrami County Jail with no bail amount set. He made his initial court appearance on August 20, 2024, in Beltrami County District Court, where he was formally charged with second-degree murder. During the hearing, Jones requested a lower bail amount to attend a scheduled surgery; however, Judge Matti Adam advised that he would receive necessary medical care while incarcerated.
Court records indicate that Arthur Jones has a prior criminal history, including convictions for second-degree assault, third-degree assault, terroristic threats, and driving while intoxicated.
The case is scheduled for further proceedings in the Beltrami County District Court. As of now, no bail amount has been set for Jones.
