Idamae Ellen Ohnstad (Berdahl), Petersburg, ND, passed away at the Good Samaritan Home in Larimore, ND on Dec 14 at the age of 99.
She was born on July 23, 1925, in the farm home near Dahlen, ND to Joe and Ellen (Sand) Berdahl. She grew up on the family farm along with her sister, Lillian Jallo during the great depression and WWII. Idamae graduated from Dahlen High School, and attended some teacher training in Mayville, ND, before teaching at a rural country school in Nash Township.
After WWII, she married Walter A. Ohnstad on July 23, 1946, and the couple built a house in Petersburg, ND, where Walter worked for the Chevrolet/Minneapolis Moline dealership for a few years. In 1950, Idamae’s parents retired, and Walter and Idamae moved back to her childhood home near Dahlen, to take over her parent’s family farm. They lived on this farm until 1978, when they moved back to a new retirement home in Petersburg, ND. Walter passed away in 1992, and Idamae stayed in their Petersburg home until 2012 when she moved to an independent living apartment in Grand Forks. Covid struck her in 2020, and after recovery from a hospital stay, she was moved to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Larimore, ND, where she remained until her death.
Idamae is survived by her three children. Gene (Marlys) of Oronoco, MN, Arlene (Pete) Peterson, of Petersburg, and Larry (Amy) of Dahlen. She is also survived by grandchildren Chris Ohnstad, Stacie Moen, Julie Lamb, Bryan Wippler, Jason Wippler, Amanda Wippler, Alisa Haugen, 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, parents Joe and Ellen Berdahl, sister Lillian Jallo, and brother-in-law Orvin Jallo.
Idamae was a lifelong member of Dahlen Lutheran Church, where her funeral will be held on 11:00 am on Friday, December 20. 2024 with Visitation 5:00 6:00 pm with a 6 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, December 19th at Bakke Funeral Home, Larimore. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral on Friday. Interment will be at Zion Cemetery near Dahlen.
The Dahlen Lutheran Church and Zion Cemetery are suggested memorials.
