NDSU Wrestling Places Strong at Daktronics Invitational

BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota State Wrestling finished with several top three finishes at the Warren Williamson Daktronics Open on Sunday at the Sanford-Jackrabbits Athletic Complex at South Dakota State University.

Senior Kyle Burwick and freshman Michael Olson led the way for the Bison, recording second-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Burwick won his round robin with a pin of South Dakota State’s Logan Swenson and an 8-3 win over Jager Eisch of Minnesota. Burwick would then fall to #24 Derrick Cardinal in the 133-pound first-place match.

Olson made his collegiate debut at the event and started off with three-straight victories by decision in the 141-pound class, beating a pair of South Dakota State wrestlers and a Minnesota wrestler. Despite falling in the final match of his round robin by a 4-1 decision, Olson won his group, but would fall to South Dakota State’s Avery Allen in the first-place match.

Brendan Howes would also record a second-place finish in the 165-pound division, with a complete round robin group. Howes went 2-2 in his group, including a win by fall and another by major decision. His pin of Air Force’s Andrew Harmon gave him the tiebreaker over Harmon to take second overall in the five-wrestler group.

Gavin Drexler and Gabriel Schumm recorded third-place finishes for the Bison. Drexler started the day off with a tech fall over Minnesota’s Theo Cha, before falling to #21 Willie McDonald in a tiebreaker 7-4. He rebounded with a win over teammate Max Petersen, 8-7, in the third-place match.

Schumm overcame a late loss in his opener and advanced to the third-place match with a win over Arizona State’s Michael Kilic, 6-3. He then secured third overall with a pin at the end of period two against EJ Beloncik of Air Force.

North Dakota State wrestling will be back in action on Friday, hosting No. 12 Minnesota in a dual. The Bison and Gophers are set to get underway at 6 p.m. from inside the Scheels Center on November 22.
