FARGO, N.D – North Dakota State soccer and head coach Mike Regan have announced the signing of five high school student-athletes in the opening two days of the signing period. The class features signees from five different states, including one locally from Fargo.
Abi Roberts | F/MF | Robins, Iowa | Linn-Mar HS
Roberts comes to the Bison from Linn-Mar High School, where the forward/midfielder is coming off of a 21 goal, seven assist season, earning First Team All-State honors and was named the Metro Player of the Year. Roberts has 60 career goals and 35 assists and is a three-time All-Iowa selection under the eye of head coach Hannah Clark. A two-year captain, she has received Cedar Rapids First Team All-Metro honors each of the last two seasons, along with three all-conference and all-district sections. Roberts intends to major in Health Sciences. She has earned academic distinction honors in each of her first three years.
Leighton Roberson | F/MF | Fargo, North Dakota | Davies HS
Roberson will stay home as the Fargo native and Davies High School product signs for the Bison after leading Davies to a state title last season. Roberson has helped Davies to three-straight conference championships and a 48-4-4 record, including scoring 18 goals and assisting 25 others last season as a forward and midfielder under head coach Nick Christianson. Roberson has earned all-state first team honors the last two seasons and earned all-state tournament accolades as a freshman and sophomore. She was named the team MVP as a sophomore and has scored 48 career goals with 55 assists. A member of the National Honor Society, Roberson intends to major in Business at NDSU. Roberson’s uncles, Mike and Todd, played collegiate soccer locally at Concordia.
Kate VandenBerg | MF | Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Cedarburg HS
VandenBerg will join the Bison from Cedarburg High School where she helped lead the program under head coach Robert Williams to a 16-3-2 season and a state tournament appearance. VandenBerg started every game in the central midfield and scored six goals with 10 assists, earning all-state and all-conference accolades. VandenBerg plays at the club level for FC Wisconsin under the direction of Andy Lee. She earned ECNL Midwest Division all-conference honors last season as a midfielder. VandenBerg has earned High Honor Roll accolades throughout her time at Cedarburg and her intended major is undecided. Her father, Joel, played collegiate baseball at Northern Illinois. Her mother, Betsy, played collegiate volleyball at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Onyx Kennington | D | Logan, Utah | Logan HS
Kennington joins NDSU from Logan High School where she has played primarily as a centerback and defensive midfielder under Natalie Norris, helping the team to the state tournament multiple times. Kennington has earned all-conference honors each of her first three seasons for Logan, including two as a defender and one as a midfielder. She was named the most valuable player and defensive most valuable player last season. At the high school level, she scored seven goals and had four assists as a defender. Kennington plays at the club level for LA Roca in the ECNL, helping the club to qualify for the Champions League each of the last three seasons, including multiple trips to the sweet 16. Kennington has also earned all-conference honors for the two years she played basketball at the high school level. She has earned honor roll accolades all four years and her major at NDSU is undecided. Her mother, Marcy, played college basketball at College of Idaho. Her sister, Alec, played college soccer at Salt Lake CC and her brother-in-law currently plays college soccer at Central Arkansas.
Geni LaMarche | F/MF | Wichita, Kansas | Maize South HS
LaMarche comes to Fargo from Maize South High School where she earned first team all-conference honors after leading the program to a 20-2 record as a junior. LaMarche scored 39 goals last season and also added 11 assists, playing primarily as a forward with some time in the midfield. LaMarche has helped lead Maize South to the Kansas State Semifinals in three-straight seasons. LaMarche intends to major in Criminal Justice at NDSU. She has earned honor roll accolades throughout her time at Maize South.
