Roger O. Martinson – Obituary

Roger Odell Martinson, age 94, resident of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Edmore, ND, died Thursday, October 24, 2024 at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, ND.

Roger was born October 7, 1930 in Parkers Prairie, MN, the son of Milton and Prudence (Olsen) Abbot. Milton died when Roger was 8 months old. Prudence then married Myron Martinson. They raised Roger on a farm near Derrick. Roger attended school in Derrick, and was confirmed at Zoar Lutheran Church in Hampden. Roger met his wife, June Nelson of Doyon, the summer of 1950. They were married in Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Doyon on January 31, 1954. They spent their first winter in Grand Forks, then moved to the farm near Derrick where they were engaged in farming. They also spent ten winters in California during the 1960’s, leaving home after fall’s work and returning for spring’s work. Roger and June moved to Devils Lake in 1996. June died May 21, 2015. Roger continued living in Devils Lake, where he has been a member of the Devils Lake Elks Lodge 1216 for 67 years and was a board member of Overland Township and Farmer’s Shipping & Supply at Edmore.

Roger will be missed by his 2 children, John (Diane) Martinson of Edmore, ND and Brenda (Bryan) Stortroen of Climax, MN; 5 grandchildren & 4 great grandsons, Benjamin (Carlye) Hoefs, Eryn (Ian) Leier & their sons Shea and Beau, Simon Hoefs, all of Grand Forks, ND, Kaden (Mary) Martinson & their son Theo of Devils Lake, ND, and Miranda (Aaron) Bergdahl & their son Asher of Horace, ND; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as his extended Elks family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Myron and Prudence; wife, June; and 2 half-brothers, Charles Abbot and Larry Abbot.

The Funeral Service for Roger will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church of Edmore on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Edmore Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota on Monday, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
