Cheryl Unterseher, 67,of Abercrombie, ND, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in her home.

Cheryl Norine Unterseher was born on Thursday, September 5, 1957, to Archie and Rosa (Piscopo) Unterseher in Bismarck, North Dakota. The oldest of 4 siblings, Cheryl and her family moved at least 12 times for her father’s career. Her family went on many road trips, with the kids crawling over the station wagon seats then entire journey. At the age of 15, she began a 37-year career with Nash Finch Company. She often baby sat for the neighbors, was confirmed in her faith, and shared many sweet letters with her paternal grandmother. Her favorite city she lived in with her parents was Rapid City, South Dakota where she graduated from Steven High School in 1975. In the later 1970s she moved to Fargo, where she continued to work for Piggly Wiggly, later SunMart Foods.

Cheryl was bartending at the American Legion Post 2, Fargo, where she met Mitch Olson. The two of welcomed Benjamin Scott, born October 3, 1995. Even after their relationship ended, Cheryl always had a platonic love for Mitch that was lifelong.

Mom moved to her forever home, Abercrombie, in 2019. She spent her time working at the Colfax Express convenience store meeting many locals and becoming a part of the community. She fulfilled her life-long dream to live in a small town and loved it.

Cheryl had an incredibly charismatic personality. She was entirely understanding, the kind of friend you’d look forward to hearing from and talking to. Whenever you got done talking to her, you would usually find yourself smiling, remembering something witty she said or a principle-based opinion on anything you would be going through. She was woman of simple pleasures, she once said “All I need is a cup of coffee, a cigarette, and a Diet Coke and I’m happy.” Through her charismatic personality, she had so many great friends who she was incredibly grateful for.

Her greatest accomplishment in her life was her son, Benjamin. She demonstrated consistency, love and sacrifice. As her only child, he was her world, attending every school event, ironing every dress shirt, and always being there as a mom. Cheryl and Benjamin did everything together. He was her best friend.

Cheryl was not afraid of dying. She bravely fought cancer for 14 months before the chemo took its toll. On the good days, she would say that it was almost like she didn’t even have cancer because she was feeling so good. She spent much of her last year with Benjamin, cooking meals, watching the news and an occasional but more frequent casino trip.

Cheryl is survived by her son, Benjamin Olson; his sisters and Cheryl’s honorary daughters, Emily Olson, and Samantha Olson; Aunt Doris Lajoie, Aunt Sylvia Unterseher; cousins, Kim and Reed; and Best Friends: Betty Olmstead, Todd and Cami Hoffer, Pat Schmit, Kristina Brown, Brenda Cossette, among many others.
