Mahnomen: Alakayak Faces 2 Felonies in Casino Case

Aidan Thomas James Alakayak, 21, is charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors in Mahnomen County District Court.

Woman Reports Assault Inside Casino Hotel
According to the criminal complaint, White Earth police responded after casino security reported a possible domestic assault.

The woman told officers an argument began after Alakayak went drinking.
She alleged that Alakayak struck a bathroom door and punched a hole through it.
She said he then entered the bathroom and strangled her while she was seated near the toilet.
She reported difficulty breathing during the alleged assault.
Officers documented marks on the woman’s face and neck, according to the complaint.
The woman’s name is withheld to protect her privacy.
Alakayak Denied Striking the Woman
Alakayak gave officers a different account of the confrontation, according to the same filing.
He claimed the woman struck him several times after an argument about drinking with a friend.
He denied hitting her and said he might have pushed her away.
Officers reported seeing blood on his nose during their conversation.
Investigators said the observed injuries and damaged door supported the woman’s account rather than his.
Complaint Describes Resistance During Arrest
Police arrested Alakayak following their investigation at the hotel, the complaint states.
Officers allege he pulled away and initially refused directions while being handcuffed.
They also reported resistance when escorting him to a patrol vehicle.
The complaint says he eventually entered the vehicle after speaking with another officer.
He was taken to the Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office and then to Tri-County corrections.
Two Felonies and Two Misdemeanors Filed
Count one alleges felony domestic assault by strangulation.
Count four alleges felony first-degree property damage involving a foreseeable risk of bodily harm.
The complaint also charges misdemeanor domestic assault involving alleged fear of immediate harm.
The remaining misdemeanor alleges obstruction of legal process involving officers.
The strangulation charge carries a statutory maximum of three years in prison or a $5,000 fine.
The property damage charge carries a maximum of five years or a $10,000 fine.
