Mentor (trfnews.i234.me) — A Bagley man faces seven felony charges following a shooting near Mentor.
Leslie Manford Anderson, 79, is charged in Polk County District Court.
The charges include attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and first-degree burglary.
The case stems from an incident early September 20 near Mentor in Polk County.
Man Found With Gunshot Wound
Deputies were called to a rural property around 2:48 a.m.
The complaint says a man identified as S.A.Q. had been shot in the head.
Deputies reported finding the man covered in blood near a metal shop.
He was taken from the scene for emergency medical treatment.
Prosecutors allege Anderson shot the man with a handgun.
They also allege Anderson fired toward two women who were at the property.
Witnesses Describe Confrontation
According to the complaint, a trail camera had captured someone walking on the property.
The property owner went to the farm after learning someone may have been trespassing.
Witnesses said a shop building appeared to have been broken into.
They alleged Anderson came from the building with a handgun.
A confrontation followed near the shop.
The complaint alleges Anderson shot S.A.Q. during that confrontation.
Witnesses also reported additional shots as they moved away and called 911.
Anderson Gives Different Account
Deputies later located Anderson at a residence near Bagley.
Anderson allegedly admitted entering buildings at the farm without permission.
He told investigators he believed property belonging to him was stored there.
Anderson claimed S.A.Q. had a small pistol and pointed it at him.
He said he grabbed for the weapon because he feared being shot.
Anderson claimed the gun fired several times as the two men fell to the ground.
He also told investigators he later burned the clothing he had worn that night.
Seven Felony Charges Filed
Anderson faces one count of attempted second-degree murder.
He also faces one first-degree assault charge and three second-degree assault charges.
Two additional counts accuse Anderson of first-degree burglary.
Prosecutors also gave notice that they may seek an enhanced sentence involving alleged firearm use.
The charges are allegations. Anderson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
