Grand Forks Post Office Fall Sparks Federal Lawsuit
Grand Forks, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Minnesota woman has filed a federal lawsuit over her husband’s death.
Julie Hill filed the lawsuit September 24 in federal court in North Dakota.
She filed the case individually and on behalf of Richard Hill’s heirs.
The lawsuit names the United States, doing business as the General Services Administration, as the defendant.
The claims have not been proven in court.
Lawsuit Describes 2025 Fall
According to the complaint, Richard Hill visited the Grand Forks Post Office on January 16, 2025.
The post office is located at 2501 28th Avenue South in Grand Forks.
Richard Hill was there to mail a package, according to the lawsuit.
The complaint says he slipped on snow and ice near the building’s loading docks.
The fall allegedly caused a severe traumatic brain injury.
Julie Hill’s lawsuit says Richard Hill later died from those injuries in September 2026.
The complaint claims the ice was made more dangerous by activity around the loading area.
It cites repeated foot traffic, vehicle traffic and runoff from parked or idling vehicles.
The lawsuit says those conditions allegedly compacted, polished or refroze the ice.
Government Accused of Failing to Address Ice
Julie Hill claims the General Services Administration knew about the dangerous conditions.
She also claims the agency should have discovered the hazard through reasonable inspections.
The complaint alleges the area was not properly treated, cleared or marked with warnings.
The lawsuit includes claims involving negligence and responsibility for the property.
It also seeks to hold the government responsible for actions by workers or contractors.
A third claim concerns whether the alleged failures involved routine building maintenance.
That issue could affect which legal protections are available to the federal government.
Lawsuit Seeks Damages
The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages for Julie Hill, Richard Hill’s estate and his heirs.
Each request seeks at least $75,000, according to the complaint.
The case also seeks attorney fees, court costs and other relief allowed by law.
Julie Hill has requested a jury trial.
The federal docket identifies the case as Hill v. United States of America.
